Major achievements:
Professor CHEN Kefu is an expert of pulp and paper engineering. In 1991 he accepted the faculty position as a professor. He served as vice-president of the State Key Laboratory of Pulp and Paper Engineering of South China University of Technology from 1993 to 1996; and president of the College of Pulp and Paper Engineering and Environmental Engineering of South China University of Technology from 1996 to 2003. Now CHEN Kefu is chief investigator and director of the national technology innovation platform of "plant resources chemistry and chemical engineering". He has devoted all his life to scientific research on and education of pulp and paper industry and environmental engineering. His main research topics are fluid mechanics and rheology of pulp fiber suspensions, medium-and high-consistency pulping technology, paper forming technology, coating technology, waste paper de-inking technology, modern pulp and paper machinery, and waste water treatment in paper manufacture. To find a solution on the bottleneck constraint on the resources and environmental effect of paper industry in our country, he has devoted persistent efforts not only to investigating the new technology-implementation of medium and high consistency pulp processing to replace the low consistency technique-to save water and energy and reduce pollution, but also to educating many people with new technology. He has achieved important results of innovation and practicality in medium- and high-consistency pulping technology. The successful invention of medium- and high-consistency bleaching technology with pollution reduction has marked his outstanding contributions to clean manufacture of the paper industry in China. He has written eight books, including Fluid Mechanics of Papermaking processing, Machinery and Equipment in Pulp and Paper Industry (two volumes in total), Theory and Implementation of Medium and High Consistency Pulping and Papermaking Technology, etc. He has published 200 technical papers, 60 of which have been accepted by SCI and EI. He has won numerous technical awards, such as the second prize of the National Technical Innovation Award, the third prize of the National Technology Development Award, and the first prize of the Guangdong Technology Development Award. In 2003, he was elected member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
