The School of Business Administration (hereafter SBA or the School) at the South China University of Technology (hereafter SCUT or the University) was founded in 1982 as the Department of Management Engineering (DME). In the same year, DME began to enroll students in its three-year associate degree program and in the following year, it began to enroll undergraduate students in management engineering. In 1984, it took in postgraduate students in management science and engineering. Since its inception, DME had been appointed by the Guangdong Provincial Government as a specialized agency to train entrepreneurs and managerial staff for state-owned enterprises and thus it had cultivated a large number of entrepreneurs, government officials and executives for Guangdong Province through tailor-made programs. Attaching great importance to the development of its faculty, the department sent the best of its faculty members to the Chinese University of Hong Kong for further study, which opened their global vision and laid a solid foundation for the establishment of a modern business school.
In 1992, the Department of Management Engineering was renamed as School of Business Administration. With its two major disciplines, management science and engineering, and business administration having been well-known in mainland China, the School established its position as the leader of management education in South China and in Guangdong Province in particular. Later in the year 1998 and 2010, SBA was authorized to confer doctoral degrees in management science and engineering and business administration respectively. In 1993, SBA was the first business school in South China to offer a MBA program and has produced over 5,000 graduates up to now. In 2002, it was one of the first business schools in China to offer the EMBA program and until now it has cultivated nearly 1,000 students, all of whom are placed in important positions in companies or government organizations throughout China. From 2002 to 2004, the School was authorized to offer Master of Engineering program (ME) in industrial engineering, project management, and logistics engineering. In 2011, SBA was authorized to offer Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcc) program and Master of Asset Evaluation program.
Over more than thirty years of development, by giving full play to its academic and geographical advantages, SBA has established a complete education system offering bachelor's degree, master's degree as well as doctoral degree programs. The School has doctoral programs for two disciplines, including management sciences and engineering (including a postdoctoral research program), and business administration; doctoral programs in 4 sub-disciplines, including theories of management and decision-making systems, industrial engineering and management engineering, logistics engineering and management, and corporate management; and academic master's programs in 6 disciplines, including theories of management and decision-making systems, industrial engineering and management engineering, logistics and supply chain management, corporate management, accounting, technological economics and management, with a complete range of professional master's degrees programs, including Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcc), Master of Engineering (industrial engineering, project management, and logistics engineering).
