From late July to early August, student athletes of SCUT won a number of medals in national sports tournaments for college students. These honors included the gold in men’s double badminton and the gold in women’s double tennis.
Student athletes from 56 universities across the country gathered at Wuhan, Hubei province, from July 27 to August 2 to compete for the 21st National University Badminton Champions. SCUT sent 12 athletes to join the event.
This is the first time for the championships to divide athletes into the High-level Professional Group and the Common Group, which made the competition extraordinarily fierce compared to previous years, especially under the high temperature of Wuhan.
In the Professional Group, Gao Tianyu, a graduate student of the Class 2015 at SCUT’s School of Physical Education and the leader of the team, together with his teammate Zeng Junwei captured the gold in men’s double, as SCUT’s men team and women team both took the fifth place in the final. SCUT also had students winning top five places in women’s double, women’s single and men’s single.
Meanwhile, the 2017 Presidents Cup, also the 22nd National University Tennis Champions, were held in the Kunming University of Science and Technology from July 23 to August 1, attracting over 800 athletes from 110 universities and over 200 presidents from 83 universities to attend the event.
SCUT sent nine athletes to Kunming to compete for this year’s titles. Liu Zhiruo and Zhao Gong, who were behind their rivals at match points for eight times, made incredible turnarounds and finally took the champion in women’s double of Group C with a close 7-6 win.
Except for the gold, SCUT’s team also took the runner up spots in women’s team and men’s double of Group C, and the fifth place in women’s single of Group D.
