SCUT moved 40 places up in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) that was released this week, taking one more step forward to joining the best 200 universities around the world.
Shanghai Ranking Consultancy published a press release of the ARWU 2017 on August 15, presenting the world’s leading 500 research universities based on transparent methodology and third-party data.
Indexes showed SCUT was placed at the 235th in the Section of No. 201-300, which is 40 places closer to the top 200 compared to last year. SCUT is also the 11th best among Chinese universities, moving four places up compared to last year.
The academic strength of SCUT has been steadily improving during recent years. According to the latest update of Clarivate Analytics’s Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database released in this July, the university had eight subject areas entering the world’s leading 1%, with its engineering, materials science and chemistry placed within the global 1‰.
Established in 2003, ARWU is recognized as the first global university ranking and one of the most trustworthy league tables. It adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles published in the journals of Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance.
