Polymer brushes offer fascinating opportunities for addressing numerous problems of both academic and industrial interests: high-quality functional or protective coatings, composite materials, surface engineered particles, metal-organic interfaces, biological applications, micro-patterning, etc. Polymers chemically grafted to the surface of substrates are typical soft interfaces known as polymer brushes. Surfaces covered with polyelectrolyte brushes whose the polymers involves electrolytes are particularly attractive because of their potential applications including adhesion, antifouling, biocompatibility and water lubrication systems. In this study, our recent researches on control of wettability and adhesion through precise design of soft interfaces such as polyelectrolyte brushes are presented. We started from fundamental science including precise polyelectrolyte synthesis and solution characterization of polyelectrolytes, characterization of polymer brushes at water interfaces including hydrogen-bonding states of water in the polymer brushes. On the basis of fundamental studies, we have successfully realized 1) super-hydrophilic and antifouling nanofilms, 2) repeatable adhesion system, 3) super-lubricant surface, 4) direct modification of polymeric solids.
Atsushi Takahara graduated with a B.S. from Kyushu University in 1978 and received his Ph.D. in 1983 at the same university. Since 1983, Takahara works as assistant/associate/full professor at Kyushu University. Currently, he is a senior editor of Langmuir (since 2016) and the President of Materials Research Society of Japan (MRS-Japan). Prof. Takahara has won a number of awards, including Polymer Science Award, Rheology Award (Japanese Society of Rheology), ACS FLUOROPOLYMER 2014 3M Award, APS Fellow, RSC Fellow, The Outstanding Achievement Award (The Society of Fiber Science & Technology, Japan), etc.
