Program Objectives:
The objectives of Engineering Mechanics are to train students into outstanding talents who develop in an all-round way, morally, intellectually and physically, and are able to engage in high-level scientific and technological research with professional knowledge and analytical methods in mechanics.
Objective 1: [foundation knowledge] to provide students a solid basis in mechanics and to prepare students for advanced research in scientific fundamentals and engineering applications
Objective 2: [problem-solving ability] to train students to identify, formulate, and solve the engineering problems in real world using the acquired skills on mechanical analysis and experimental testing.
Objective 3: [team-work and leadership] to develop students the essential abilities of cooperation and communication, especially the abilities of coordination in key scientific and engineering projects.
Objective 4: [systematic understanding of the discipline]To encourage students to extract scientific and technical issues from practical engineering work, and solve the problems using the gained knowledge.

Objective 6: [lifelong learning]To engage student in lifelong learning and to support students to continuously acquire and employ state-of-the-art testing techniques, computational methods and applied mathematics in problem-solving for engineering science problems.
Programme Features
The Department of Engineering Mechanics at SCUT has built a new undergraduate program which considerably shortens the schooling length without compromise on essential mechanical courses. The program seeks to combine a broad education in mechanics and mechanical engineering with a systematical training in analytical and experimental skills. The students will be equipped with problem-solving skills as well as state-of-the-art technologies in applied mathematics and engineering-oriented measuring/testing. In this program, the undergraduate curriculum study is finished in the first three years. Students can apply for Master (“3+1+2”) or Doctoral (“3+1+4”) programs at SCUT (without entry exam) at the end of the third year. From the fourth year, the students approved for graduate programs will start the essential graduate courses in addition to their final year project. They will be qualified as Master or Doctoral graduate students respectively from the fifth year, supposing they successfully complete the bachelor degree thesis and get enough credits of graduate courses. The undergraduate program involves a new tutorial system, which provides systematical supervision for the academic studies and research training of the students. The school has intensive connection with domestic and overseas academic institutions, and provides considerable exchange students programs, which prepares students a global view and international experience.
