“Among over 2,000 universities in China, you chose SCUT; and among tens of millions of university candidates, SCUT also chose you. This is a precious and beautiful encounter,” said President Wang Yingjun on the opening ceremony for the new students of the Class of 2017.
Two sessions of the ceremony were held simultaneously at the Wushan Campus and the University Town Campus on the morning of September 12, bringing together 6,163 fresh undergraduates and 5,903 fresh graduate students from all over the nation and the world.
Leaders of the university including Zhang Xichun, Secretary of the CPC SCUT Committee, and Wang Yingjun, President of SCUT, attended the ceremony. Distinguished academics that were present on the event also included Wu Shuoxian, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Li Licheng, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Huang Ping, a National Distinguished Lecturer.
Wang Yingjun addressed a keynote speech on the ceremony, encouraging students to “establish yourself at university, with an eye toward the world”.
“Fulfill a historic mission, and live up to the expectations of the times,” she said. “Make a contribution to our country and positively influence the world.”
104 newly-enrolled students were awarded freshmen scholarships, while 85 graduates of 2016 were commended for their excellent performances in doing graduate theses.
Zhang Xichun presented certificates of honor to representatives of new students, encouraging them to keep modest and prudent, and to put higher demands on themselves in college life.
Tian was one of the awarded students, a Tujia ethnic boy from a mountainous area of Chongqing. He was admitted to SCUT with help from the Dream Project, a special program that offers supports to high school students in remote areas to study in universities.
“It is a great honor to be on this stage,” he said. “I will cherish this opportunity, double my efforts on learning, and repay my family and the society.”
The ceremony was broadcast live via public online channels including Weibo and Toutiao, attracting nearly 20,000 viewers to watch from mobile devices.
