On November 20th, an academic paper The Change and Restructure of News Value System on the Age of Big Data, written by associate professor Wu Xiaokun of the School of Journalism and Communication, was reprinted by Xinhua Digest on the 22th volume of 2017 and selected as the cover article. This paper holds a logical discussion on the change of traditional journalism because of data news in terms of news value system, drawing huge attention. Xinhua Digest, a national comprehensive and academic digest providing information, is published every half month. Its articles represent the advanced research of social sciences.

The academic paper The Change and Restructure of News Value System on the Age of Big Data, makes a comparison and analysis of traditional news value and data news value based on the research on domestic data news. It discusses the issues like whether the value of traditional news and the value of data news have the same origin and follow the same logic, or whether the theory of traditional news value is suitable for data news, etc. According to the paper, the theory of traditional news value isn’t completely suitable for the age of data and should be expounded in a new way. It emphasizes that data news inherits some ideas of traditional news value while it breaks the original news value standards in some way. To analyse data news, analyzers not only need to observe the change of its surface and the production process, but also have to break the appearance of data and its form, researching about the change of news modalityfrom its internal value.

The original edition of The Change and Restructure of News Value System on the Age of Big Data was published by Contemporary Communicationson the 4th volume of 2017 with an original title of The Outbreak and Restructure of Traditional News Value Owing to Data News.
