In this series of lectures,we plan to introduce the Ericksen-Leslie system that models the hydrodynamic motion of nematic liquid crystal materials.The system couples the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the transported harmonic map heat flow to the unit sphere.I will then discuss in details on some recent development on the existence,uniqueness,and regularity for such systems in dimension two and dimension three.I will also plan to talk about some relevant boundary control problem for such a system in dimension two.
